We all scream for CUPCAKES!
Did I blink and miss something? It appears I looked away for one second and came back to a cupcake craze. What happened to the traditional birthday cake? When did this holistic cupcake trend start ‘trending.’ Why complain? My sweet tooth cravings for bake goods can now be instantly satisfied. I can visit one of the numerous local cupcake shops, purchase a warm, moist and fluffy chocolate cupcake topped with a buttery cream cheese frosting whenever I want. Melt in my mouth good. Drooling yet? Cupcakes also offer a variety of flavors. Goodbye ordinary vanilla and chocolate and hello to peppermint patty!
As this delicacy grew in popularity cupcake bakeries started appearing in Rochester. This includes Dollop Cupcake Bar, Sugar Mountain Bake Shoppe and From Scratch Cakery to name a few. But who takes the cake? Dollop Cupcake Bar just won Cupcake Wars on the Food Network, a high contender. To determine this outcry, Roctivities.com rounded up a group of girls who all shared a common characteristic, a major sweet tooth.
The Road to Rochester’s Best Cupcake
To conduct this scientific experiment favoritism had to be eliminated. This was done by performing a blind tasting. The cupcakes were displayed with no indication of the bakery. I created a master sheet to keep track so I did not participate in judging but did help with the tasting. The cupcake testers were given a judging sheet and asked to record their thoughts after each bite. Between cupcake tastings they were asked to cleanse their palettes with oyster crackers and a beverage. Each bakery was asked for their two best-selling cupcakes, pushing for an apples-to-apples comparison. Finally, after the cupcake tasting was completed the testers were asked to rank the cupcakes highest-to-lowest.
The following bakeries participated:
The cake testers all wrote similar comments. The cream-cheese frosting was rich, creamy and tasted homemade. This was a favorite and marked on multiple sheets stating best frosting out of all of the cupcakes. However, most stated the pumpkin cake dry. Tasters were not fond of the peanut butter cupcake noting, “nothing special.”
The tasters accredited the creativity with the Hostess flavored cupcake. One taster commented: “tastes just like the store-bought brand but better.” Other comments included (regarding both cupcakes) pretty but bland, tastes like I could make them at home and artificial sweetening was questioned.
A majority commented stating the cupcakes looked and tasted grocery store-bought. The frosting and cupcake were extremely sweet. One commented, “Great for kids.” Overall, most preferred the red velvet flavor to the chocolate.
Firstly, the tasters all commented on the fancy presentation. The majority raved about the carrot cake stating: “delicious” “carrot cake actually tastes like carrot cake” “gourmet” “real ingredients, loved the raisins and shaved carrots.” As for the frosting, ‘just okay.’ Salted chocolate caramel was rich and chocolatey. Some loved the sweet and salty combination.
One word: calorific. Many agreed the frosting on the peanut butter was amazing – smooth tasting like real peanut butter. Each cupcake includes a pudding filling. Most commented the pudding fillings were overpowering the cake making the cupcake overwhelming with flavors. Most commented on the cake being airy and smooth.
The majority simply did not care for the cannoli cupcake stating it was way too sweet. However, the tasters all approved of the very vanilla. Most commented on the cake being fluffy but still rich and extremely moist. The frostings were a little sugary, everyone was able to taste the granulated sugar.
Most tasters found these cupcakes fun and enjoyable due to the flavors. They found the peppermint patty to be too minty in flavor. The tasters enjoyed the strawberry shortcake stating great texture, light and airy, taste like angel food cake, refreshing and tasted just like strawberry shortcake.
Who takes the cake?
Remember this was a complete blind tasting. The names of each bakery were not revealed until the rankings were completed and submitted. The cake taster ranked purely on presentation and more importantly taste.
